Travel plans are an essential element in all major development proposals helping
proposers to meet sustainability, accessibility and congestion reduction goals. Appropriate Travel Plan Development Control Guidance is an essential component for securing robust and meaningful travel plans through the
planning process. Appropriate guidance brings clarity and certainty to all parties involved in the travel plan process.

The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister / Department for Transport publication ‘Using the planning process to secure travel plans: best practice guide’ encourages local authorities to prepare better local guidance. Across England,
where it exists, local guidance currently varies considerably and many development travel plans could be more effective than they currently are. Under the new planning system, it is possible for development control guidance to
become a Supplementary Planning Document.

Conference speakers will share their knowledge and expertise in preparing best
practice guidance for Transport for London and English local authorities and will explain the recommended layout and contents for good guidance. The issue of monitoring will be discussed as well as the relationship of travel
plans to Transport Assessments. The process for preparing a Supplementary Planning Document will also be discussed.
